Some guys have all the (bad) luck

Sunderland were on the wrong end of another terrible decision yesterday which denied them a share of the spoils at Reading.

After referee Steve Bennett chalked off what seemed a perfectly legitimate injury-time winner against Aston Villa last weekend, you would have thought that Sunderland would have been due a slice of luck.

But it wasn't to be, and fortune smiled on Reading instead as Steve Hunt's injury-time goal was given by linesman Steve Rubery when the ball did not appear to have fully crossed the line.

So Sunderland's last two games have yielded just a single point when they should have returned four.

Is it any wonder Sunderland fans feel aggrieved?

When you are involved in a relegation battle that might be nip and tuck all the way to the finishing line in May, how costly might these errors turn out to be?

And what sanctions should be taken against officials whose mistakes could make or break a club's season?

Obviously, no amount of criticism of the officials will change their decisions - even if TV replays and technology back up Sunderland's case in both instances.

They say these things even themselves out over the course of the season, but at the moment Sunderland are three points down.

When Lady Luck does finally decide to switch allegiance, she has a lot of making up to do!
