Keane hoping Jones can avoid op
Sunderland will have to wait another three weeks to find out just how long Kenwyne Jones will be out of action with his knee injury.
The Trinidad & Tobago striker suffered ligament damage playing for his country in a friendly against England at the start of June and will miss the start of the new season.
Roy Keane said today that Jones is due to see a specialist in three weeks' time after which the Black Cats will know more about the extent of his knee injury - and Keane is praying that the striker does not need major surgery.
If Jones needs a major operation he could be out for months, although Keane has refused to speculate on just how long.
Keane said: "Kenwyne will see a specialist and we are hoping to know more then, but we are hopeful he can avoid major surgery."
If all that is needed is a minor op to tidy up the knee, he will be out for a much shorter spell although he will still have to get up to full fitness after missing out on pre-season.
Jones was Sunderland's leading scorer last season and to lose him for a chunk of the new campaign would be a big blow.
Keane is already looking at bringing in a proven Premiership striker to give him more attacking options while Jones is out.
