Rome wasn't built in a day
SO it was the Liverpool fans who went away happy on Saturday night singing the annoyingly catchy Fernando Torres song.
I'm not taking anything away from his cracking strike, but surely every defender knows that when you back away from a striker of Torres's class, the balls only going to end up in one place. And that's exactly what happened.
The Noz and Collins were excellent all day but were at fault for the goal. Gordon stood little chance.
But enough about the negatives, there were far more positives to take from the game. For the first 30 minutes Sunderland out played the visitors and passed the ball around with flair and confidence. Something I haven't seen for a long time from a Sunderland side - if ever!
Ok, once Liverpool got into the game, it was a different story, but lets not forget we were playing Liverpool who will no doubt finish in the top 4.
Malbranque in particular showed his class today, and definitely looks the best of the new signings. What we really lacked though was the killer touch. Diuof fluffed a great chance to score and no disrespect to Daryl Murphy, but he just isn't good enough to play up front in a premiership team, although he did play better when moved onto the wing.
We need a quality striker if we are going to kill off teams this season. Is Benni McCarthy really the answer?
We were sloppy in the second half and lacked the flair of the first, but as I keep reminding myself, we were bottom of the Championship this time two years ago. Rome wasn't built in a day! Now we are playing decent football and making a team of Liverpool's class really work for the three points.
If we play like this every week, and with the addition of 2-3 quality players, it's really hard to see us struggle this season. There are far worse teams in this league.
Playing well and narrowly losing against a team like Liverpool is nothing to be ashamed of.
Well done lads, bring on Spurs!

First half hour we were absolute class. If we play like that for the rest of the season i can see us finishing 12th or above easily. It would be nice to have a season with no relegation worries, desp need a striker though, just cant see where our goals will come from.
Hopefully we can take our home form away from home this season. Bring on Spurs.
