And boss Roy Keane has a lot of work to do this week to rebuild shattered confidence and dented morale after the Black Cats' worst defeat for a quarter of a century.
During the two disastrous Premiership relegation seasons in 2002-03 and 2005-06 Sunderland turned in some pretty dismal performances but they have never been on the end of a scoreline anything like as bad as their 7-1 mauling at the weekend.
