Sunderland's first Premiership home defeat of 2008 left the Black Cats sitting perilously close to the drop zone.

Everton collected all three points at the Stadium of Light, ending Sunderland's four-match Premiership winning streak on home soil.

Andy Johnson's 55th minute goal - which actually went in off the striker's arm - was enough to keep David Moyes' men firmly in the hunt for fourth place and Champions League qualification.

Sunderland slipped to 16th in the table and, while they remain two points clear of third-bottom Bolton and a point above fourth-bottom Birmingham, both those sides now have a game in hand of the Black Cats.

Sunderland fans were shell-shocked as they left Goodison Park after seeing their side smashed for SEVEN by Everton.

And boss Roy Keane has a lot of work to do this week to rebuild shattered confidence and dented morale after the Black Cats' worst defeat for a quarter of a century.

During the two disastrous Premiership relegation seasons in 2002-03 and 2005-06 Sunderland turned in some pretty dismal performances but they have never been on the end of a scoreline anything like as bad as their 7-1 mauling at the weekend.
